Nicola di bari - festival de san remo 1965

Nicola (270 approximately – 343) was bishop of Myra (city of Byzantine Empire), and soon his cult spread all over the world.

As the Basilica di San Nicola here honors Saint Nicolas of Bari (also known as Saint Nicolas of Myra), the city holds a large celebration in his honor every May, commemorating the transport of the saint’s remains from Myra to Bari in 1087. The Festival of the Translation of the Relics, as it is called, is a large religious folk festival that draws people from all over the province. Lavish parades dramatize the story of Saint Nicolas as people dressed in medieval costume dance in the streets. The Archbishop of Bari holds communion for the entire city (and its visitors) and people pay homage to the remains of the saint, especially the manna that forms around his tomb.
